I want to write about this abandoned Saudi Arabian Airlines jet. But i'm bad with plane spotting, so i don't know what plane is this. Simply because i think this is just well, another Airliner. Any help?

It's a Boeing 747 of some flavor. Usually "Boeing 747" is enough.

747 family, for sure. Someone more knowledgeable will be needed to tell you the specific model.

Boeing 747-100B for sure, apparently Saudi Airlines bought 8 of them and I see at least 3 in your picture. I would say no older than 1979. I'm not sure if this is the one with the rare (only 1 ordered out of 9 100B's) Rolls Royce engine or the GE engine.

I see..

Thank you!

well, they don't use it anymore. It's just left there, in deserted runway.

No problem, I'm surprised to see such a limited-production airplane be abandoned like that...then again, they leave Astons and Ferraris in the desert to rot.

Ya, me too.

Maybe it's like saudi tradition.

When they bored they either do some hagwalah or make a statue of their cars. That's the most common jalops do in there.

Seen any hagwalah in person while you're over there?

Protip: If you can get the registration number (a.k.a. tail number), and Google said number, there is often a wealth of info about that aircraft's history. If it's still in service, you can often find its location or even its current departure and destination.

For instance, the plane on the right looks to be HZ-AII , which is a Boeing 747-168B owned by Saudi Arabian Airlines, built in 1982, first flown on 19/03/1982 , delivered to the customer 1982-04-02 and in storage since June 2011. The one on the left is definitely also a 747, but I can't read the tail number.

Thank you!

I'll use that, definetly.

And in saudi, On Storage means left in Tarmac in desert.

And we get to fly in planes from the 60's that delta/ northwest still has in service so sad. why I do my best not to fly on their airlines. Hopefully that changes soon.

Well, that's sad.

The oldest plane i ever been in is an overloaded 737-200 back in Indonesia. It's scary as fuck. The pilot tell me after the landing, he was a friend of mine, and said that on that flight the plane was so heavy that it can't fly higher than 6000 feet.

The DC-9s will be gone by the end of the year. It's not the age, but how you take care of them. I would fly the -9 ANY day of the week before those newer parked Saudi 747s. 100 new 737-900s coming, a bunch of new A321s and a good number of new A330s soon. First 717 from SW/Boeing arrived this week as well.

Yea I will say it's more the noises those thing's make on take off creaking lol, and if I am thinking right those are airbus correct, that's usually what I try to get on, I enjoy the room, the comfy seats the LCDs in the headrest lol. I do believe maintenance is very important. You sound like a pilot how does a jet engine backfire?

Engineer, not pilot. LCDs and leg room aren't really a function of the plane, but how the operator chooses to configure the plane. What is amazing is that most fliers can't tell a new plane from old if it has a newer interior in it. Now, admittedly, the -9s haven't been upgraded to the latest and greatest interior as they are being phased out. The interior of the new 737-900s is very nice. Huge LCDs in each seat. Things are evolving in a positive way.

I guess that is a good point, I will say usually I just presume if I see a Boeing it's old, If is see a Dc'9 it is old, if I see an Airbus its New. I try to make sure I get on Airbus planes. But I really have no clue how long that bad boy has been in service when it was made, or it's maintenance history. On a side note where I work we Just got our 727 this year. N489FE was donated to my schools program. here is last landing.

wish I could find the decommissioning video.

Cool! 727s were interesting planes. If you bumped the slats out a bit they would cruise at a higher Mach number.

We have some of the early A320s and they are just about 20 years old. We have Boeings that are brand new. We buy both for various reasons. What is of is that the design life for the 320s is 60000 cycles and then you are supposed to park them. No one is happy about that. The Airbus is designed to more of a disposable aircraft while the Boeings can fly as long as you want provided you maintain them. It will be interesting to see if Airbus will change their philosophy with the next gen.

The most important bit of information you can get is the aircraft registration. The plane to the right of your picture appears to have the registration HZ-AII. The first part of the registration, before the hyphen, will tell you the country of registration . In this case, HZ indicates Saudi Arabia. Once you know the registration, you can search for a history of that particular registration. Searching HZ-AII on Airliners.net finds a handful of photos of a Saudi 747 with that registration (see above), and the photographers will often make comments about the aircraft's history. Once you know the registration, you can start researching the plane. Searching "747 HZ-AII" shows that this aircraft is a 747-168B that first flew on 19/03/1982 and was put into storage in June of 2011.
